Destiny Leeward Islands

January 24th, 2009 No comments

Greetings from St. Martin,

We had a hectic but fun week with Carol’s Mom, Jan, and her Aunt Mary Ellen who visited us in the USVI. After they arrived in St. Thomas we went to St. John for several days during which we circumnavigated the entire island staying in several different harbors and bays, many of them part of the Virgin Islands National Park. Back in St. Thomas for the end of their stay we went to Coral World and rented a car to tour the island. They were amazing on the boat and wonderful company–no seas too rough or boarding too difficult for them–we hope we’re doing as well when we are their respective ages.

Destiny has now reached the first of the Leeward Islands of the Caribbean arriving in Marigot Harbor on the French side of St. Martin on Sunday, January 18th after an overnight passage from Charlotte Amalie in St. Thomas. The overnight was our first without crew and all went well–although we were pretty tired after 2 hr. watches through the night. Jolie, as usual was in the cockpit 24/7 but probably slept more than either of us. Unfortunately the wind was directly on our nose and we motor sailed the entire trip, but the passage was made more than pleasant by the moon and a brilliant Milky Way. Now that we are on French/Dutch soil it feels like we have really left the States behind us. We had our first “real” croissant of the trip when we arrived, and look forward to many more.

Phone and internet service continue to be challenging. We frequently find wi-fi, sometimes free, but more often than not it is pay as you go. The most outrageous fee we encountered was $1.00 PER MINUTE in Charlotte Amalie to get online. Since our US cell coverage is spotty down here and very expensive when it does work, we are using small hand held radios to communicate between ourselves and Sat phone whenever possible for calls to the US. We have cancelled the 508-280-3600 cell and are using 781-696-5849 for emergencies only as our incoming and outgoing calls on that line cost us $2.29 even with an international calling plan. Best way to reach us is by email or Sat phone 1-863-200-4223 (which is still an international call from US).

We stopped over in Phillipsburg on the Dutch side of the island on Thursday enroute to St. Barts where we plan to spend the next week until Kent’s sister Susie and husband Richard arrive in St. Martin next week. We expect to be in the St. Martin/St. Bart area until early March, at which time we will move south to Antigua. Hopefully, we will make it to Guadeloupe and Martinique as well before heading back north in late spring.

Christmas in Paradise

January 6th, 2009 No comments

Happy Holidays Everyone, despite the sunny beautiful weather, we will be thinking about “home” and everyone we will miss seeing this holiday season.  Lest you feel too bad for us, we have been basking in wonderful weather since we arrived and are having a great time.

After we left Roadtown on Tortola, we went to Virgin Gorda for nearly a week and spent time at Saba Rock, the Bitter End Yacht Club and Leverick Bay–all in Gorda Sound.  From there we visited Anegada where we had the best local lobster we have ever tasted and did some snorkeling off one of its many reefs, and of course visited Foxy’s at Jost Van Dyke.

There are so many islands, inlets and harbors that we will never visit them all in the time we have allotted for the BVI’s.  We leave here next week for the USVI and after a brief stop in St. John (possibly for Christmas) will go to St. Croix to visit Kent’s family over New Year’s holiday.  After that the Spanish Virgin Islands of Culebra and Vieques.

Carol’s mother and aunt visit early to mid-January in the USVI after which we will leave for St. Martin and be working our way down the Leeward and Windward Islands of the Caribbean.

If any of you have some vacation time scheduled down here, please stay in touch as we would love to catch up with you and depending on our schedule we’d love to have you join us on Destiny.

So far, our blog has been a dismal failure–it seems too much like “work”.  But we do plan to document the trip down on the Caribbean 1500 at some point with some pictures on the website.  A few pictures of our recent adventures are included.

We wish you all the best, and you will be in our thoughts during the upcoming holidays. MERRY CHRISTMAS & HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!
